engineering students we think that a more thorough course in physics should form a distinct course in the science section.

There are a number of students who have no intention of qualifying as engineers who would wish to take up science as a separate subject.

Various suggestions have been made for the inclusion of other classes in the syllabus but it is important to keep down expenses, which threaten to be much greater than was anticipated, the supply of teachers is limited, and the objects with which the classes founded should be kept strictly in view. There is no intention we understand to do anything more at present than give a commercial and technical instruction which will be immediately useful in some business or profession and it will be a mistake to permit the classes to develop into a species of University Extension Lectures, nor do we think it the duty of the Government to provide in these classes the instruction offered by other bodies such as the Sanitary Institute or the College of Medicine. The officer in charge of the classes will find work enough to do in developing them on the lines on which they were started.

There are one or two classes however which may be properly added to the present list. Translation from Chinese into English and vice versa was included in the original syllabus as a part of the English class but no teaching in this subject has so far been given. We believe that an hour a week might be set apart with advantage for this subject if qualified teachers can be found and we think they can. Evening Continuation Classes which do not give Chinese an opportunity of continuing the study of their own language evidently fail to fulfil their object. A Chinese class where business Chinese was taught by a good teacher ought to prove very attractive. Shorthand is useless unless the student learns typewriting and we recommend the formation of a class in type-writing for those students who have qualified in shorthand.
